New Year New Art------Work in progress!

I am not a full time artist.  In fact I have hardly touched my paints these past few years.  Life gets ahold of you, you blink and before you know it you are trying to find a way back to what you used to love so much.  I remember what some of my biggest issues were when I stopped painting.  My frustration left most paintings unfinished and my lack of time was a great excuse to let the dust build on all my supplies.  NO MORE!  I promised myself this year I would find a way back and I am getting there slowly but surely.  I recently took an art class to help brush up on the basics.  By the end of the class I was fired up and ready to go........but now I am trying to figure what next....Should I continue to work on some of the exercises we did in class?  Work on some of my old paintings?  Work on something new?

I did find something in class that I had forgotten about that I feel is crucial to my growth as an artist......I found fellow artist.  We all shared the similar frustrations, dreams and demands for our time but most importantly the love of creating art.  I  really do hope that this group can come together again like it once did in supporting each other.   If anyone has any ideas or discussions they want to get started please let me know.

Dear Sloane,
OK I am in the next level. If any one lives in Los Angeles, or close to it there is a Artist Festival in Brentwood, California, on September 13. This a 28th annual Autum festival, that brings out over eight thousand visitors of srt collectors & buyers. I plan to be there to gain exposure. Let me know if any one wants the link or e-mail address. Pardon for any typos.

Seems to me that the group is on point. We have agreed to become a group by joining. Objectives have been set forth in part, and are being bandied about. Help is being sought. In my MBA classes, I learned that there are 4 stages to group functioning: storming, norming, forming, and performing. In the first stage there are disagreements, misunderstandings, and disappointments due to differences in aesthetics, objectives, mental processing, priorities, etc. Then as the dust settles down, the group begins to recognize what common goals, strengths etc exist. Agreements are made. Folk find their way to their particular productive roles (forming), and (finally!) objectives are set and made. So the "wandering in the wilderness" feeling is actually a business norm for groups.

A common desire expressed in several posts concerns online venues for display, sale, and enhanced networking. I recommend the following sites that are free to join, and will sell your work (accepting credit card payments) without commissions, on your behalf. Both sites are global in nature and have extensive databases re: museums, galleries, art resources, grants, fellowships, call for artists, and competitions by region and nation: www.wwar.com ("World Wide Arts Resources"), and www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk (Saatchi Gallery offers free online portfolio space for artists, and their sales floor is very active.)

One useful function this group could adopt would be to help emerging artists with portfolio creation. The proposed content could be uploaded, and members could f=give feedback that will allow the artist to select the strongest artworks for presentation. What think ye?

Dear Karine, I'm going to tell you of two instances in my life which got me focused on art collectors and art. It is often assumed that collectors know little or nothing about art and only buy art for their collections when they are convinced by another that a specific painting is a good investment. I was working at the "Signa" Gallery (owned by John Little, Elisabeth Parker & Alfonso Ossorio) the summer of 1958. One day in July Franz Kline pulled up in front of the gallery in a panel truck and we offloaded a 6' x 8' painting for an up coming show the painting wasFranz Kline's first color painting a landmark painting, since Kline always painted in black & white. An apprehensive Kline asked Orssorio if he thought that he could get $500 for the painting? Orssorio said that he could get at least &1500. A man came to the gallery everyday to look a the painting but didn't buy it, finally a Swiss Gallery bought the painting a the painting was shipped to Switzerland. Franz Kline was having a Retrospective in NYC in November and the painting came back to the USA and the man that came to the gallery everyday bought the painting for $7,000.00 and I asked him why he hadn't bought the painting for $1500.00 and he said that the Kootz Gallery gave the painting cache'. A drawing of mine was prominently displayed at the "Hammer Gallery" @ west 57th St.. NYC although admired by many collectors my name couldn't compete with Windslow Hommer, Thomas Moran, John Singer Sargent. Price wasn't a factor, but perception was. Donald

Hi everybody,

I relate to the responses that have been made as well. For my part, I am willing to participate but with all the projects going on right now, I am lacking of time.I am thinking that it's also a question of priorities.

But to be constructive, I would ask what do we need as artists that want to move to the next level?

1. Comments, critiques, encouragements from our fellow artists and also from the public and art dealers:
Do I have a real signature body of work? Which pieces indicate a real signature body of work? How can I work on that (more movement,...). What are my strenghts and my weaknesses? In my personal opinion, in the "experts' opinion?
In my work what is really me and make people react and what is just nice and that can appeal to buyers as well)?
what make people react to my work? What do they say about it?
what makes my work unique and authentic?
....

Maybe each of us should commit to leave a comment, an encouragement (very important) to an artist a week, not all of them or a few of them (which makes me think that I won't have time to do it) but at least one artist and change ecah week.

2. Tips to be more succesful in the business of Art as it is a business and we need to get paid to pay our art supplies, our rent.... to carry on creating...
What works, what doesn't work... What needs to be done. What do we have to avoid (some types of galleries, organizations that are taking full rights to work submitted for photo contests,....)
Testimonies on Successes and failures.
To be more efficient, we could start with a list of priority topics. We cannot cover everything at once, it's a process. But each month, when you take time to look at what you have accomplished, you see that you have step by step moved to the next level.
I have to tell you that Aletta de Wal helped me and is still helping me a lot in moving to the next level. I think she should be involved in that. She would be a great asset for all of us. She knows what she is talking about. Of course it's a commitment and an investment. There is no miracle in this matter.

3. Get more art collectors and art dealers traffic. Advertise about our work
How can we do that? How can we get them to be interested in us? How can we create a giant portolio of Art works for instance with links to each of us?
How can we advertise about that?
We are creative people. Each of us has an experience, connections. I am sure we could come up with something powerful and that will pick curiosity and arouse interest. If I was an art dealer, I would love to have a giant portfolio at hand, something easy to look at.

4. The possibility to ask more specific questions not related to the previous points

5. Featured artists from time to time to make it more personal and lively...

....

Sloane, you did a great job and we all have to acknowledge your ideas, your perseverance and your willingness to make it work. But it seems that we don't make it a priority because we are not interested enough in what we get from it.
So, maybe we could create a "structure" for this website based on what do we think we need as artists that want to move to the next level?
Of course, at one point, somebody will have to decide for the structure and each of us will have to reasonably commit. You have gathered 130 people, we should be able to do something with that! And I am going to repeat myself, ask Aletta's perspective on that.

Before I stop writing, I wanted to share these words with you:

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself! "

"From the pain comes the dream,
From the dream, comes the vision,
From the vision, come the people,
From the people, comes the power,
From the power, comes the change..."

All my Best,

Karine
