Curator’s Comments:
These painterly encaustic works are striking. I intuitively respond to the exploratory mark making and skilled layering of the wax medium. The graphic components such as the directional compass lines or recognizable numerals ground the bright color and expressive gestures. Time line 2 is particularly strong. The duller grey lines read as smoke trails horizontally across the surface, breaking up the path of the higher chroma yellow. The smaller green organic shapes in the top and bottom of the picture plane further suggest geographic anomalies in a map like plan of special orientation. I’m equally attracted to the piece titled Pressured Fate, though it offers a distinctly separate structure and color system. The larger areas of quieter space are balanced by the compositional disparity in the sections of densely occupied space, composing a figural shape on a blue ground. I find these paintings to have a positive intermingling of easy fluidity and worked surfaces.
