Curator’s Comments:
This new piece, simply enumerated 37, doesn’t offer dimensions or media, but I presume the work is a collage. Analog or digital, the image wonderfully melds artificial adornments with fully organic eyes. The placement of the largest (human) iris to the right of the composition nicely engages and counterbalances the myriad assortment of other types of eyes. I appreciate that the eyes don’t form pairs, which keeps any individual subject from appearing as too strong of a focal point in the piece. The black and pink color pattern unifies somewhat disparate shapes, and engages in the ornamental treatment of the forms. But rather than present delicate beauty, the work overwhelms us with an almost decadent landscape of repetition. Photographic in nature, the image becomes abstract as the blackest pupils move us through the densely embellished space. The eyes transform into jewels, and the jewels become eyes.
