Acrylic on stretched canvas - 18" x 20"

The first Hornet Moth painting (No. 1) was painted in a realistic style in the early 90s and sold to a collector who may at this time be in the Seattle area. This new version utilizes a new direction in painting that I have been thinking about for some time. Loosely based on the newer paintings of Chuck Close, this "method' allows for the application of color into a painting unrelated to the actual subject. It also takes a simple subject and allows for an energetic interpretation that goes far beyond the actual subject. This is the first experiment of many that I plan to do.

This Hornet Moth (No. 2) painting shows a pleasing interplay between compartmentalized, decorative space and realism.  I can see the Chuck Close inspiration, and appreciate your “energetic interpretation” of the subject. The visual gestalt that puts together the insect allows for rather complex circular and diamond patterns within the grid.  I enjoy the dissolution of the exterior contours of the form into alternating squares of color, which softens what might otherwise be a heavy contour. I also find it interesting that this painting is actually more representational than your previous butterfly piece, in which the high chroma warm hues throughout the work flatten out the space. Posted some years back, you indicated this would be the first of many experiments with the subject matter.  I would love to see if you followed through with this exploration of abstraction, and how the paintings evolved.
