Self-portrait.

This was a combination of inspiration from the old stories that my Grandma used to tell me about Jack Frost, two photographers, and wanting to play around with textures.

Curator’s Comment:

Bitter Cold shares a strong tradition of contemporary dramatic self portraiture with Cindy Sherman, but there’s an even more disquieting undercurrent of darkness within the context of the commercial fashion industry.  The closely cropped face is beautiful and doll-like in her frozen expression.  I also detect a slight attempt at androgyny.  To this end, the cropped proportions are reminiscent of cosmetic/beauty advertisements, while there are more subliminal suggestions of death, destruction or erosion.  I am drawn into the surreal texture, but the piece doesn’t travel all the way into special effect.  It is an arresting image, but I never lose my suspension of belief.
