Curator’s Comments:

I’m not certain what I’m looking at here by way of media or design in Eastern Memory I, but I’m attracted to the smoothly stylized decoration.  I imagine these are digitally created works, as they have broad fields of uninterrupted saturated color, generally devoid of the artist’s hand/brush strokes or gestural marks.  But regardless of its technical creation, I respond to the concentration of darker hues in the center, creating a hierarchy of color and contrast within the radially balanced design.  The small coy fish which are showcased in another painting you have on the site are skillfully integrated into a subtle, understated border in this work. The fine gradations of value within the inner ornamental border appear embossed, giving the repeated patterns emphasis without competing with the larger motifs. While many of the elements are obviously Asian, as confirmed by your title, I feel the completed image draws upon other Western traditions, for an interesting and eclectic overall scheme. I realize this was posted some time ago, and hope you will consider adding new work to the site.
