Curator’s Comments:

Bright Light in Darkness is an especially intriguing work.  While cited as being created by an ‘experimental process’, it’s not apparent to me  if the surface is additively built up with impastoed white pigment on a darker ground, or if an entirely different process was employed such as liquid light emulsion.  But whatever the process or technique, the image has the distinct feeling of being cropping out of a more expansive spatial whole.  The organic striations in the surface, especially in the top section, look as though dripped motion was arrested or frozen.  Similarly, the piece entitled Tupelo exhibits what appear to be accidental marks, but is more grounded with its stylized representation of a tree and more recognizable figure-ground relationship.  I quite like the floating sensation of the deep pink abstracted foliage.  The color shift between the warmer top section and cooler green ground further articulates a naturally occurring environment, even as the left side of the canopy appears to dissolve into the light sky.
