These mixed media fiber works are reminiscent for me of Hannah Wilke’s seminal womb series- natural forms that instinctively reference vaginal openings as metaphors for creation and destruction.  Identifying this larger form as a Yoni-shield reiterates its paper structure as simultaneously vulnerable and resilient.  The abaca and hemp fibers become skin like in their smooth application. I like the sheer simplicity of this sculpture, as some of the more decorative embellishments may compete or conflict with the powerful universal contours.  But I do see the surface encrustation of bits and rust and moss as evoking the antiquation of an artifact- unearthed, or actually generated from the trees and soil.  From this vantage point the object also maintains a vessel characteristic, like the hull of a small boat.  Its sides psychologically offer elemental protection, but do not fully envelop the viewer, or necessarily shelter from harm. There can be no doubt the very small pieces are startlingly intimate. The sculpture entitled Exposed for instance is visceral in its inclusion of bone fragments and wool, conjuring lucid associations with fetish and death.  But I particularly enjoy viewing the individual works in the context of other studio pieces in process; the repetition of the organic elements and materials heightens the heart-beat rhythm of the series.
