Curator’s Comment:

At first sight I thought the title Fountain Faireys was formally dialoguing with Shepard Fairey’s serigraphy with its boldly articulated red stripes and decorative patterned embellishments.  But after making out the subject matter in the densely developed image I understand the title more directly, and appreciate the conceptually methodical vacillation between fully developed/tonal objects and lighter drawn motifs.  There’s an interesting tension between what on the surface appears to be random elements of chance. The elongated horizontal format nicely stretches out the rhythm of vertical and horizontal designs, which compete and intensify each other on account of their warm and color temperature changes.  I also sense a light hearted candor throughout the print, as the humorously animated characters in the slightly off center right section underscore the text announcing ‘Godsmacking Snogs’.  Lighter bubble shapes and swirls swim freely between these vignettes, again moving between fully illustrated half tone areas and flat space.  This graphic work is funny, technically practiced and stylish.
