Curator’s Comments:

This (untitled) whimsical painting defies definition within a particular artistic genre or style; I appreciate the stylistic connections to folk art, post-impressionism, and graphic cartooning. The figure is decidedly feminine with her flipped up yellow hairstyle and dress, but lacks additional feminine features in lieu of rather crude appendages and anatomy.   I think there’s humor in the image, with the quizzical expression between the angel and devil over the subject’s shoulders. But as a painting, the striking red-orange and blue jewel tones provide lush compositional elements. Becoming more familiar with the range of your work, I see the inclusion of a strong centrality and repetition of pattern as critical in the formal expression.   The line of horizontal trees along the top of the piece further echo the repetition of other circular shapes- the flowers, and of course the figure’s round eyes, puffed cheeks and small rounded mouth!
