Curator’s Comment:

I find it interesting that these paintings depict identifiable figures in the landscape, but teeter on the edge of non-objectivity with their textured impasto surfaces, and use of ornamental objects.  The balloons just as easily become pure geometric spheres, detached from any tangible reality.  The lone female figure in Girl and Balloons is also reduced to a simplified conical form and gesture. Her topographic elevation on the grassy dirt mound nicely assists a downward sweep of her arm, moving into the valley of the right side of the composition.  This painting is equally appealing in its development of a striated brown and blue landscape, with unambiguous directional overhead light despite the multiple yellow suns.  The red dot of a balloon basically in the center of the piece could have been a blunted stop in the picture plane, but the longer horizontal format and progressing swath of color and light naturally move the viewers’ eyes through the space.
