Curator’s Comment:

Identity Games (2) is a mysterious image which effectually engages dreamlike surrealism.  The individual figures, while identically clad, have different expressions if not entirely different faces.  There’s a vague awkwardness to their standing and squatting poses- rather stiff gestures for stop action movement.  And then there’s the peculiar pair of legs dangling from the top of the picture plane.  Partially due to the gestural handling of the paint medium, the viewer is uncertain as to the nature of narrative unfolding, as well as the function and complexion of the windowed interior space.  This second piece in the triptych is my favorite among the Identity paintings, as the figures exhibit a rather forceful countenance. There’s also implied urgency to their psychological relationships, as their more frontally facing poses provoke and demand reassurance or certainty from the viewer.  In the later and previous works there is more a sense of bewilderment in their shared physical identities.  But it is this expressive handling and color stories which creates this sober and distinctively complex world.
