Curator’s Comment:

While you’ve previously expressed a desire for more critical feedback on my part, I feel enigmatically compelled to tell you what I enjoy about this new piece.  I’ve appreciated the raw, gestural quality of many of your (prolific) drawings, particularly the black and white figurative ink pieces with visceral deformations and abstractions.  Clown seems to push this macabre sensibility further, but tempers it with more delicate, methodical mark making. It is the archetypal dance between order and chaos, as the small blue circular pattern injects a lighter sensibility into the cadaverous face, reading as both ornamentation, and the possibility of hundreds of staring eyes.  The thin lines that drag across the cheekbones intimate to the viewer that the face presented is simply a mask, tempering the graphic intrusion of death.  I’m unsure if the yellow-gold squiggled lines dropping vertically through the picture plane are also intended to read as hair, but the effect is to confer another softening organic element onto the otherwise startling face.
