I made this creation completely out of driftwood finding the perfect pieces for each part of this guy he is super strong and I allow people to sit on him for pictures at the shows I attend. He also rides in the bed of my truck lol. he can stand on his own without the plywood in the picture but he was roadside so I wanted him stable in the grass.

Curator’s Comments:

This is an interesting visual perspective on your sculpture Leo the Lion. While the depictions of these wood composite animals seem generally straightforward and without narrative content, the lack of specificity of the face in this work adds to its mystique.  I believe the fish, by contrast, with their more complete forms and strongly contrasting eyes are more reminiscent of taxidermy trophy specimens.  The fish also exhibit a certain finesse of craft in their careful modeling and carving.  But the lion’s body and face takes twists and turns pushing against the tension of the form. The animal appears to be an amalgamation of perfectly shaped pieces of contorted driftwood- your statement supports the idea that the lion was additively fashioned rather than subtractively carved/ removed from a larger whole. This creative process helps it move past natural portrayal through traditional craft technique to produce a surprisingly spirited entity.
