Curator’s Comment:

Lyda’s totems are akin to strung lamp work glass beads on a colossal scale. The strong verticality of the sculpture is eased by the slightly wavering forms, segmented by an interesting repeated decorative motif. The intermittent staggering of the blocks results in a surprisingly animated line, but the structures remain reassuringly stable. I find the inverse relationships of the individual carved protrusions versus indentations especially nice, as it sets up a rhythmic interplay within the piece, while achieving some visual dissonance. It’s also appealing to view this piece in the landscape. In a more austere environment it would no doubt look more intense, with candy colored primary hues. The viewer might get more of a feel of the reflective versus matte surfaces. But here I’m struck by its harmony with the natural surroundings, reflecting deeper jewel tones in the land and sky.
