This latest oil painting removes the ambiguous nuance of context and period in its faithful depiction of a Biblically inspired subject. I believe I would comprehend its origins even without the accompanying text. However, while I find the figure exudes a deified serenity, there is a vague air of modernity in the smooth blue background space around her. The emblematic and tranquil color reinforces the symbolic identity of the Madonna, but the unadulterated tone supports vibrant contrast to the warmer flesh tones and drapery. I partially enjoy the graphic bands in the flowing textile enveloping her. I’m also intrigued by the rather extreme value shift in the shawl from the right to left side, as these light shifts don’t otherwise appear within the swathed figure or in the surrounding negative space. While the light doesn’t appear to emanate from within, it does cast question as to the ultimate source.
