My 10th grade math tutor had a serious set of braces. Wires, retainer, rubber bands: the works. I couldn’t understand a word she said. But it was obvious she was smart and she knew it.

Thank you Kristen.  I hope you have a chance to come to my show. The Math Tutor will be there!

Curator’s Comments:

Math Tutor came up in a random search today, and I thoroughly enjoyed the accompanying text as much as the piece. Despite the achromatic palette, I did recognize your excessively animated signature style immediately when I clicked on the thumbnail.  While your saturated and high chroma color are driving forces in the expression of some of your other narrative pieces, this linear based piece doesn’t disappoint.  The figures almost meld into the densely filled ground, but the darker concentration of marks around their heads and the book focus on their exchange.  The tentacle-like arm of the tutor tips her into the realm of monster fantasy, but her pupil appears unfazed. Likewise for her wired teeth- without the explanation in the text one might attribute this as another menacing attribute.  I enjoy how the busy computations and symbols filling the page continue into the tutor’s hair and twisted body- as though she was the physical incarnation of math itself.
