Curator’s Comment:

These two cloud paintings at first seem like outliers among your tightly packed photorealist urban interiors.  By nature of their organic vaporous mass, clouds appear to me less ‘real’.  But looking more closely I can see they are as well organized and defined as the architectural paintings.  Where the brushstrokes appear to become more gestural they are actually manipulated further in phases of transparency and opacity; the wispy white-grey marks fade along their edge until they ultimately vanish into the blue sky.  The long singular white line cutting across the composition, apparently the trail of an aircraft, is an interesting pictorial device.  It alleviates the coherent harmony of the space and introduces a human element, or intrusive artificiality in what seems to be a boundless natural sphere.  I reluctantly prefer Meditation to Launch for its engaging point of view.  Whereas Launch is a buoyant and airy piece, the viewer confronts one large cloud head-on. Meditation brings me into the center of the painting between light and shadow.  The airiness of the whiter cloud below lifts me up through the sky, to understand a denser weight of a darker mass above.  I also feel the wide stretch of space in this work, as the horizontal trails move me more swiftly across the sky.
