Curator’s Comments:

Peace Inside is an elusive sculptural installation.  The individual forms seem more grounded or fixed in place than some of the other floor pieces, perhaps because of the uniformity in value in minimal contrast with the sand.  I also see physical relationships suggesting metamorphosis or transition, as the cylindrical porcelain vessels appear to grow up towards and even into the white figures.  Standing in a trio with arms crossed, their repeated gesture alludes to an archetypal Jesus pose; three wise men in the shifting sands.  The long arcing sinuous element in the back area appears to be slightly incongruent, although it successfully creates a counter flowing trajectory.  I’m not sure how I feel about the blue framed border.  It strongly delineates a geometric boundary which may restrict the sensation of a more expansive ground.  I think it may be more formally effective in the related piece entitled California, as the blue edge is echoed in the interior vessels.  The blue pigment washed onto the forms also implies curvilinear movement, as if it was organically applied on a turning wheel during its initial creation.
