s all mathematicians know, the name of Pell's equation arose from Leonhard Euler's mistakenly
attributing its study to John Pell. This is Pell's lament and is part of a series of 36 works dramatizing the mistake and its consequences in a kind of visual narrative.

Curator’s Comment:

Coming upon this piece, Pell’s Equation 2, led me to look up Pell’s theory.  I can’t say that I understand any of the ramifications of the mistake, nor application of the older mathematic theory, but the misattribution of theory itself as inspiration for the artwork is intriguing.  The primacy of the equation appears timeless, and yet the bold color and repetition of form transmit a sense of urgency.  The repeated quadrants also conjure Warhol’s 1960’s electric chair serigraphy.  While this piece shares some of the graphic sensibility and compositional format, the pixilation also suggests this image was created digitally rather than with hand printing silkscreen.  The creative process is a curious aspect to consider here, as the subject deals with the precision- or fallacy- of numbers.
