Curator’s Comments:

Preparation is a striking sculptural bust, expressing complex universal emotion.  The Classical and highly realistic depiction of the subject creates strong illusion of form, which is sharply contrasted by the extreme cropping of the torso. His facial expression is not ambivalent, but appears to be transmitting several emotions simultaneously.  Staring upward and off to the distance, there is some apprehension or concern in the furrowing of his brow line.  But the vertical thrust of the body and slight tilt of the head also projects strength and confidence. This uncertainty (or duality) is what keeps bringing me back to this wonderful piece.  Looking back through your other sculptures on the site, I remember admiring several fragmented forms. They too offer some ambiguity of flesh if not intention. I also admired the direct vulnerability of Last Thought. Revisiting this body of work has allowed me to see it with fresh sight. I find it most interesting that Preparation reveals the entirety of the head- open eyed and alert.  Nothing is withheld. Yet ‘he’ instills as strong a sense of wonder and anticipation as the more abbreviated corporeal vestiges.
