Reflection of Syrie is an interesting image, suggesting a fairy tale or myth.  I find myself wondering what the translation of a photograph to a quilted image does to a picture, and in this case I think it considerably slows down the viewing.  While the segmented pieces are masterfully connected and crafted, there is still evidence of compartmentalization inherent in the process, especially in the bottom half of the picture.  The reflection has a silvery translation from the chosen textile which beautifully simulates a mirrored likeness.  The brighter white fabric of the dress in the top half carries more contrast and visual weight in the composition, but is nicely balanced by shapes throughout.  I find myself contemplating the small shifts that occur between both images and wondering if some omissions were simply made because of the change in point of view, and are visible in the photographic reference, or if they were purposely moved or expanded to create movement in the piece. (For instance, the position of the red potted flowers changes in relation to the two echoed scenes, as does the large green plant at the woman’s feet.)  While the viewer doesn’t need to see the photograph to appreciate this textile rendition, one does consider the slow articulation of beauty, piece by piece, to tell a story.
