Curator’s Comments:

Sea Creature Decay is an exquisite ink drawing. The undulations within the organic figures and exacting chiaroscuro give form to the fantastical.  The large proportion of white negative space in the small piece sets off the overall value pattern and asserts the illusion of the subject as an object rather than picture.  I also appreciate the abstraction of the creature.  I can (possibly) make out heads and tails, but the bodily delineations of flippers and shadowy viscera are almost grotesquely beautiful, particularly in the context of wet decay.  When I first viewed the drawing I assumed it was another one of your intaglio prints, which I admired several years ago. The same control of direct mark making is evident here.  As it came up randomly on the site, I do hope you continue to share new work.

Admirable command of the medium.
