Curator’s Comments:
Squared is a wonderful painting, playing with the viewers’ expectations of and experiences with sight and portraiture. The oil on canvas medium and more articulated center of the face set us up for Classic realism, while the squared pixilation reminds us of a viewing experience that is decidedly digital. I find it curious to consider the painting is actually the reversal of images blurred by facial recognition software. The central features are tightly focused and expressive, just as the edges dissolve into obscured abstraction. The deep red background lends the piece a formal quality, subtly channeling Baroque drama for the contemporary face. After this painting caught my attention randomly, I was surpriseed to look back through the rest of your portfolio. Squared appears to be an outlier among the more traditionally and expressively painted full figures. I wonder if it was an experimentation of form, or represents a different direction or body of work. In either case, I do hope you consider posting new pieces. These are accomplished and pleasurable works.
