Curator’s Comments:
Soul of an Unknown Sum has a gorgeous interface of deep red-violet and golden hues. The whitish opacity of the wax medium is particularly striking against the semi -translucent and overlapping oil pigment. I am also attracted to the increased density of color in the center of the piece, which gradually forms an amorphous figurative shape. The thinner bands of color conversely form tenuous trails along the top and bottom of the non-objective composition. Looking back through your other encaustic paintings, I remembered admiring some other works a while ago. Admittedly, the lower contrast of the value pattern in this piece is not as dramatic as some of the other paintings with clearly divided color boundaries. Nevertheless, this piece is deserving of a closer look.
