Curator’s Comments:

This is Nowhere # 15 is a poetically reticent and restrained piece.  The ironic title seems inherently paradoxical in ones desire to draw attraction to a particular space. I also feel the textural overgrowth creates a strange intimacy, as I search for variation within the uniform surface of the landscape. I can’t detect evidence of living vegetation, and yet there is an unshakable feeling of unwavering growth and expansion.  The vines (kudzu?) mask most of the grounds topography- suggesting the envelopment of mysterious structures underneath.  From a purely formal standpoint, I appreciate the verticality of the vine cluster on the far right, and it upsets the waves of horizontal and diagonal movement coming in from the left side of the picture.  After viewing your other pieces on the site, I was reminded of the multi-frame sequences you’ve used in other landscapes, which arguably suggest the passing of time.  This is Nowhere needs no reminder that we’re witness to the seizure of a frozen moment and place- indistinct enough that we could easily have passed it by for less nuanced surrounds.
