Curator’s Comments:
I’m attracted to this new piece you recently posted, entitled Escaping Monsters. The sweeping black marks are suggestive of a tail of some creature, without a fully formed, or distinct figure-ground relationship. The saturated red hue throughout the background of the painting unifies the gestural brushstrokes, and imparts a menacing or alarming tone. Looking back through your other work on the site, I am also enamored with the understated complexity of Sea Prowlers. Having a related subject matter and restraint of color palette shared by Monsters, the multiple heads provide the composition with numerous areas of emphasis. While the figures are highly stylized, their black patterns stand out against the scumbled and scraped ground, and float against the muted hues. The changing directionality of the darker shapes provides additional visual interest, and is suggestive of some receding space. Thank you for sharing this new (and older) work with us.
