Half-Pixels are a series of images that are the direct result of the inevitable amalgamation of man and machine. The figures teeter between human and humanoid, distorted by a multicolored plasmic digital ether.

Viewing the Half Pixel series again, I’m drawn to this untitled red piece for the vibrant tension between the figure and digital/pictorial distortion. The stretched column moving vertically through the long composition reads as pure light rather than solid form, bringing associations with spirit and intellect. The placement of the column and gesture of the hand on top is particularly effective, looking as though the mouth had widened to release or absorb energy. I still generally prefer these pieces to the more recent images with fleshier bodies on a white ground. But Variations on a Theme xix in my thinking operates less within the realm of human oddity or malformation, and asks the viewer to contemplate the physical body in another transformative or amoebic shape. Because this image is not easily identifiable I don’t struggle to interpret the forces at play, but appreciate the organic attraction of the wing like formation. These are compelling images, and while some have vaguely disturbing associations, it’s impossible to look away.
