Curator’s Comments:

This piece entitled Wobbling came up on the site today, despite it being created more than a decade ago.  The subtly of the piece’s value pattern demands larger viewing, and no doubt creates an even stronger impact when viewing the object.  It is a highly original painting, playing with scattered light against a dim, but fully realized structure.  The result is a wonderful interplay between order and chaos; rendered control versus painterly expression.  The viewer is simultaneously aware of reflected light and physical dabs and feathery brushstrokes of yellow ochre and white.  I found it interesting that matte gel is specifically noted as a medium.  I associate the medium with semi-transparent glaze, and yet the application here reads as mostly solid and opaque.  The pale light believably crosses a surface, rather than dissolves into it. It’s a beautiful piece, and for me exemplifies the manner in which artists are struck by the profoundly ordinary in life, and elevate it to something sublime.
