Curator’s Comments:
Who am I asks an existential question of the viewer, but the painting functions on a visceral, haptic level. There is intense emotion in the expression of the face, fractured by the extreme broken color palette. The stare can be interpreted as direct and even accusatory; perhaps because the saturated high chroma color and position of the open black contoured eye. But the hair concealing half of the face also provides a barrier in the picture plane between the subject and viewer, thereby creating a dynamic push and pull. I came across this portrait in a random search of images, and remember I was similarly drawn to your paintings that had an abstracted but recognizable form. The fully non-objective pieces don’t employ a comparable grounding element, or subject to help contain the dynamic and swirling strokes of raw color.
