Layering of paint and dreams

This past weekend I participated in Marin Open Studios. Our studio building, The Isabel Cook Building at 1000 Sir Francis Drake in San Anselmo, CA, had about 100 people in attendance for the two days that we were open, Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.

a good problem to have!

week 2 of painting full time. wow. really a change. when i don't have to think about anything else, the painting goes much more smoothly! also, i have time to sit and look a LONG time to decide when/where to place a mark/shape. what a luxury! or maybe a necessity...

Labeling your images on this site

Hi any and all who read this...just a thought; I keep finding so many works that don't list size, media, or any hint of what they are. I just thought I'd throw out the idea of labeling this info because I know I'm probably not the only person who would be interested.
Thanks for listening! I'm sure enjoying everyone's works, would just like a better idea of what I'm looking at sometimes.

learning not to see the new studio

well, i had to give up my old studio. i had gotten used to not seeing the oven just behind the easel i worked on most (because it got more north light). and to not see the sink and fridge behind the other easel. since i am now a full-time artist, conserving money is much more important. shock! so i have moved my studio into the "storage bedroom" of a generous friend's place. NEWS

Lately, I have had one of my works added to a major collection in Athens, Greece as well as one possibly going to a museum in Mexico. Another work belongs to the City of Puglia, Italy and more are going to other places - can't give details yet...

I added sunsets to my photos.

Acrylic on canvas painted impasto and painting knife over airbrush,

Sunsets is an ongoing series. I am an Expat. Californian. These paintings come from a sense of immediate distance, of separation, of childhood for me. They are born from a clarity of color and light along warm sand and asphalt hot enough to burn the soles of the feet.

Experiments

I wanted to share images of new paintings I've been working on. They are the complete opposite of the work I normally do. I needed a break from them and recharge that battery. Plus, since sales are in the tank everywhere, its a good time for experimentation.

Painting comes from within

I paint butterfly

I often paint butterfly. A owner of Gallery Shimada, Kobe (it's 7th largest city in Japan) asked me why I paint it persistently. I did not know why.

According to the book "Symbolism", Penguin, butterfly means metamorphosis.

Its larva turns into cocoon and finally into butterfly. When it is lava, it eats vegetables and not favorable to mankind. But when it becomes adult, it eats aphids to protect plants.

The ultimate human experience: creating art

Creating art, to engage in creation, is my ultimate human experience.

I don't want to be too far out there, so that this blog becomes a soap box trapped in a hall of mirrors, where I only see myself nodding in agreement at every angle. Sakura(Cherry Blossom)

I paint Cherry Blossom every year.

I used to hate it because it never bears fruit, even though Japanese people like it very much.

They like it because flower is very short-lived and it seems it concentrates its highest beauty at its peak.

I like Cherry Blossom with different reason. It blooms every year after a long gloomy winter time.

It gives us hope and encourage us to live.
