Curator’s Comment:
I came across Red Sparking Wine by chance, and was immediately enamored with the gestural splash of the work. While the medium isn’t indicated, I enjoy the painterly splatter of the crimson paint across the almost scraggly black contours. The roughness of the drawn lines beautifully contrasts the perfect pale spheres in the background, just as the geometric shapes provide a cleaner echo of the contrasting circular splatters of red and value reversed white ‘wine’. I also find it an interesting design decision to crop the base of the glass along the bottom edge of the piece. It allows the space to remain open visually, while bridging the eye across the bottom of the picture plane. It’s a joyous piece that expertly plays with the tension between order and chaos. What at first seems purely expressive and free belies a consummate approach to composition and unique value patterns.
