Curator’s Comments:
Ballet (1) came up randomly on the site today, and I spent some time looking at and comparing the numerically designated first versus second version of the subjects. They both have an elegant composition, and attention to the diaphanous quality of the skirts. While the second version shows greater contrast of value, I ultimately am more attracted to #1, with the softer value pattern and hazy blurring of edges. The closer distance to the figures brings the viewer into the grouping of dancers, and swaying visual movement. I like that the figure furthest to the right recedes spatially, and suggests an extended line of ballerinas. The progression of poses of their slippers also creates a turning motion in the piece, whereas the similar position of feet in the first image creates a stronger feeling of synchronicity and orchestrated harmony. I realize these were posted many years ago, and am hoping you add some of your new work to the site.
