Curator’s Comments:

Into the Void is a fresh and bright piece, with vigorous color blocking paired with surprisingly delicate elements.  The tree line at the bottom of the composition at first appears to disparate in the handling of easily identifiable trees in a landscape, but they actually are symbols of trees rather than representation.  Formally the line of green dots provides a grounding anchor that leads to the broader mass of the same hue on the right.  But the transparency within that form further plays with the viewers’ sense of space and perspective.  The open white areas of the piece surprisingly read as both clouds and architecture.  Buoyant and visually lifting within the picture plane, the white beautifully offsets the primary yellow, blue and gray swaths of color.  Looking at the adjacent works you have posted on the site, I realized I’d admired and commented on some other landscape some time ago that had a patchwork design.  On the surface, Into the Void utilizes a contrasting method of configuring landscape, but I can also appreciate the conceptual interplay between figure-ground in atmospheric versus patterned space cutting across several types of works.
