Curator’s Comments:

Of these blown up paintings of various berries, I most enjoy Fruit Loops.  While the actual fruits offer a photorealist attention to surface and color to heighten the naturalism, I find the exaggerated scale of the cereal instead imparts an otherworldly quality.   While the raspberries and others have a drama in the homogeny of form, the irregularity of the fruit loop palette injects an element of chaos into the mass grouping.  Perhaps as the viewer I’m accustomed to experiencing the ubiquitous cereal by the spoonful and haven’t fully contemplated the irregularity of the form.  The darker blue and green loops in particular suggest cell platelets under a microscope.  I find it humorous to consider the source is not biologic mystery, but familiarly marketed and processed food stuff. The inclusion of the edge of an easel and bottle, assumingly included for scale, add to the irony of the work.   It’s as if we need reminding it’s just a beautiful painting after all.
