Curator’s Comments:

Winter Bounty is a pleasing painting that takes formal aspects of trompe l’oeil into a slightly more expressive and painterly realm. The highly representational rendering of the simple still life shows off a fine interplay of visually contrasting surfaces textures and colors.  But the subtly rounding of various corners in the picture looks more like that of natural human sight rather than a sharply defined photographic translation.  The scarlet red ribbon traveling from off canvas down through the center of the work artfully draws attention to the major points of emphasis, while the green architectural framework further encapsulates the composition.  I enjoy the dramatic and rich umbers of the bird and background paneling offering warmth to the iconic winter skates and bundled scarf.  The PA Bounty notice is an ironic touch adjacent to the watchful crow, just as it provides a classic visual balance to the similarly stark objects below.
