Curator’s Comments:

I love that the action shot titled Missed! captures a split second moment in time, while also softening the dramatically charged space with sepia hues.  I imagine the warm washed over tone in the bottom of the piece is the dust rising up from the stampede rather than a digitally manipulated haze, but either way, it imbues the photograph with a hazy romanticism. The misty blue-grey sky relieves the dominant brown tones; these soft fields of color nicely contrast the shaper focused details in the animal subjects. The three white horses equally spaced across the picture sets up a dynamic equilibrium as the other animals weave through the narrow openings.  I also enjoy the small dog in the center, and how he beautifully echoes the coloration in both groups of horses, and becomes an unexpected focal element.  His diminutive scale by comparison reminders the viewer of the stature and power of his majestic companions.
