Curator’s Comments:
I appreciate the Classical stoicism of these portrait busts; particularly Gabriela’s Roots. I am not sure if these are bisque fired pieces, raw clay or if another surface treatment is represented. However, the matte surface beautifully allows the articulation of the textured hair and organically worked collar treatment to contrast the smooth expanses of skin. The bottom piece injects a surreal element into the otherwise realistic depiction. Warrior’s Heart Wish similarly combines contemporary representation with small elements of fantasy. The decorative embellishments do not call to mind a particular narrative tradition for me, but instead represent elemental symbols of snakes, a hunt, and the spiraled rays of the sun. The figure’s closed eyes inject a dreamy quality into the piece. Again, I’m drawn to the smooth perfection of the subject’s skin, and subtle modeling of her idealized features. She’s an engaging depiction of strength and femininity. I’m very happy you shared your sculpture on the site, and look forward to it.
