Curator’s Comments:

The gorgeous color in the skin tomes of Ebony Goddess caught my attention today, despite the painting being created, and posted, many years ago.  The violet undertones create smooth shadow and depth, and complement the warm palette overall, which extends into the pinkish ground.  The lighter tints further highlight the anatomy of the head and neck. The piece is rather straight forward, but does not have an academic mood, but rather a reflective and meditative quality. The subjects three quarter profile also contributes to the pensive gaze, and allows for a slightly voyeuristic position for the viewer.  The work stands apart from many of your other abstracted and expressive portraits on the site. While Ebony Goddess is devoid of symbolic iconography, it is a striking portrait.  One might argue that less is more here, and the austerity allows for greater reflection.
