Curator’s Comments:
Where’s the Vodka? appeared randomly on the site today, and I’m thrilled to rediscover the juicy painterly depiction of an ordinary subject. The title and large scale proportion of small objects creates an unexpected depiction for still life; the olives come across as monumental, even skewered on the toothpick. The oil media offers up beautiful glazed highlights and saturated depth in the shadows. The muted green ground supports the red-green contrast in the subject itself, further echoed by the vibrant end of the decorated pick. While the painting is highly representational, the soft handling of the edges of form imparts a better-than real characteristic, and keeps me viewing longer. Recognizing it was posted quite some time ago, I’d love to see what you’re working on now.
