Curator’s Comments:

Once Upon a Summer Evening came up on the site today, and it appeared especially poignant as we round the corner on a warm summer in the Northeast. (I’m assuming you’re still located in Vermont.)  This photograph is a beautiful piece, wistfully capturing a mostly abandoned and forgotten pastime. From a purely formal standpoint, I appreciate the emptiness of the screen against the trees.  While the foliage doesn’t necessarily look overgrown, it does block the viewers’ line of sight.  The trees could also be viewed as figurative forms, standing in soundless wait for a picture show with no possibility of return. While the compositional placement of the central subject defies the classic photographer’s rule of thirds, it sets the viewer up at ground height, bringing us into this quiet and vaguely forlorn scene.  The last time I commented on your work you were returning to your photography after a two year hiatus.  I do hope you’ve continued as planned, and would love to see where your vision has taken you now. Please consider posting new work on the site.
