Curator’s Comment:

I was attracted to this smooth, nearly industrial scene, but was very surprised to see the other works in your portfolio.  You reveal three distinct approaches to subject, ranging from photographically inspired realism, to textural impressionism, to this more austere and reduced architectural abstraction.  Canal Reflections particularly stands out to me because of the cool relationships to form, describing what appears to be a specific environment, but ultimately transcending place.  I enjoy the articulated edges of the forms, though the view is far from idyllic. While the water of the canal exhibits multi-hued reflection and depth, the surrounding structures by contrast are even, and devoid of character.  Specific media isn’t listed, but I see a strong painterly manipulation of light, shadow and edge, creating a visually inviting and appealing space.  The warm brown and pale blue tonalities are rhythmically balanced through analogous shape and patterned space.  But I still interpret nature taking a back seat to the engineered infrastructure, with relatively small amounts of natural foliage pushing up and around the edifice in the background.
