I like how most of your paintings initially appear to be non-objective color field studies before noticing the minutely detailed figure- establishing a more traditional figure-ground relationship.  The ground in this particular piece, Betrayed, is even more ephemeral than most.  While it doesn’t draw the viewer into the space with luscious high chroma color- as in the smooth aqua Isolation or textural Passer-by, it is subtle and understated. It’s as if the emotion and state of betrayal is actually more inward looking and delicately comprehended rather than an intense and fiery passion, as it customarily evokes.  The neutralized ochre ground also contains fissures or meandering paths, breaking the quiet solemnity of the space.  Perhaps betrayal is a communicative breakdown rather than an abrupt break? I find the square picture plane in this series also creates a certain tension in the space. Rarely occupying center stage, the lone figures enter or exit amorphous and uncertain realms.  Sometimes the emotive golden color carries them into enveloping warmth- darker tones suggest the edge of an abyss.
