Curator’s Comment:

I’m very attracted to the primacy of materials and shape in these unique works.  The eroded edges of the metal provide a rich contrast to the more saturated pigment of the paint.  This piece in particular functions as a painted sculptural form; both whimsical in its exclamation reference, and sophisticated in its more minimal sensibility and visual impact.  The top piece appears to have a patina of sorts, mixing blue bits along the contour, and succumbing to softer modeled color in the center.  The bottom dot/target is obviously more graphic, and while accentuating the long verticality of the piece, gives the eye an end resting point.  There’s obvious humor in the iconic shape, alluding to Pop and maybe even harkening back to early street art. (Haring comes to mind). The more traditionally rectangular works still have an interesting figure-ground dynamic, but I believe it’s in the shaped supports that these pieces become fully animated and realized.
