Curator’s Comment:

I was surprised to see in the caption that these paintings are acrylic.  The scumbled surface appears to carry a rich quality that I find difficult to coax from matte pigment.  Big Blue is especially lush with its saturated blue, slightly violent ground.  The broken red lines moving across the horizontal plane conjure associations with landscapes and scars; breaking the steadiness of an even facade despite the weathered and previously worked over surface. I also positively respond to the adjacent painting titled Village.  While I can appreciate the grounding and framework that a specific identifiable subject allows, I don’t feel more definition is necessary in these works.  There’s a joy in the pure painterly non-objectivity of the medium in my opinion that retains freshness when not tethered to definite form.  Village also nicely utilizes a vertical pull of strong brushstrokes through the piece, creating a formal dialogue between the yellow clusters at top and bottom.  Again, the built up and abraded marks are viscerally connective, creating guided steps for the viewer to travel through the vibrant space.
