Curator’s Comments:
This is an interesting series of straight photographs that seem to be more rooted in bodily performance than they are in portraiture, or even narrative photography. Several pieces remind me of the explorations of gender relationships by the late Ana Mendieta, “What is Interdependency?” is arguably less theatrical than most of the other posed situations. There is a quiet intensity to the space between the couple. I like the choice to have their eyes closed, which focuses the viewers’ attention on their physical (straw) connection rather than their individual expressions. There is a potential awkwardness to the models in such close proximity with the viewer entering their space; the white background helps to still this self-consciousness. I also note the natural similarities between the subjects in terms of coloring and proportion, as it helps me associate them as direct equals rather than noticing physical differences of age, racial identity, etc.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
