Requiem to an Orchard came up randomly today, and I was taken in by the seemingly disparate character of the interior picture versus the exterior image within the frame.  The accompanying statement helped to contextualize the photographically green landscape in opposition to the densely constructed reddish houses rendered with textural collagraph printing techniques. The piece provides for interesting contemplation of the hand worked section representing industry or progress, while the “natural” space is represented by an arguably more technically sophisticated medium. I would have imagined that conceptually if this dichotomy were to be explored in dual media, the housing development would be more likely represented in a mechanical manner.  Instead, the viewer is lured into an engaging space where the rural field is downplayed.  But one might argue that visually the frame itself is an encroachment. This sophisticated and unexpected handling of print media is quite complex.  Part of the beauty in the layered chine colle is that the transitions ultimately express both natural and intangible boundaries.
