Curator’s Comments:

This beautiful piece, Cool Blue, came up in a random search on the site today.   The small section of striated texture and blue cast glass is a pleasing surprise in the interior of the simple white bowl.  The irregular and proportionally small section of contrast is reminiscent of the Japanese technique of kintsugi, where cracks in pottery are filled in with gold-dusted lacquer.  It is unlikely the inclusion of the accent in this piece resulted from a physical imperfection, but the glass inclusions nicely disrupt the regularity and continuity of the form.   The color and shapes of the blue embellishment is also suggestive of water cascading over the edge of the bowl, playing with the idea of utilitarian function.  As is the case with many of your pieces on the site, Cool Blue plays against expectations of traditional forms in a subtle and unexpected way.
