Bird Thing

Unusual Blockish Agate, amazing twin quartz eye pockets, carved bone and sterling

Bird Thing is just the start of a full eagle, hawk, or turkey vulture. I plan on extending sterling wings to the head of this bird thing and finishing out the rest of the body to showcase a visionary flying eagle. The head by itself is a very unusual rock with a square type shape and two eye pits with beautiful eye crystals sparkling outward. I centered this carved bone beak directly between the sparkling eyes. I can not wait to get the ideas out of my head and transfer them to my hands for this creation. The only problem I have is that my hands can’t keep up with my head. So, I’m trying to keep my sanity, while funneling all my thoughts and ideas into this intense creation.

Curator’s Comments:

Bird Thing is just one of dozens of unique creations on the site you created with mixed media and found objects. Coming up in a random search today, I was struck by both the surreal and anthropomorphic character of the head.  There is a provocative tribal and patterned quality to the arrangement, and sophistication in the controlled placement of the feathers.  While your notation below the sculpture suggests it was a work in progress when posted, I admit I like the form as is, much like an animal mask or bust.  While the beak form certainly projects a bird-like identity, the creature draws upon a composite of characters for its identity.  Small inclusions of wire suggest a structural reinforcement as much as ornamental decoration.  But the bit of silver also connects the piece to your jewelry.  I couldn’t find an image on the site that looked to be a further developed version. I wonder if you did eventually build it wings, or leave it in its present state.
