Curator’s Comments:
L’anthurium came up in a random search on the site, as I was surprised to see it belonged in the context of your other hard edged post-painterly abstractions. Aside from a more naturalistic and darker subject matter, the use of space is also handled quite differently. The centralized potted plant has a figurative quality, but it floats within the subtly graduated ground. The blended background hues suggest a hazy sky/ground relationship, but without a discernable horizon or break in surface texture. I find the deep ultramarine in the top section appealing, especially against the dark green leaves. I also like that the white pot breaks up the otherwise dark and muted value pattern, while the form echoes the heart-shaped leaves. I’d be interested to see if you have similar organic works in another series.
